RARE KALAKAUA KAILUA RESIDENCE HAWAII 1890's SILVER HALIDE PHOTO ON 8X10" MATT

Description

This is a fair quality shrinkwrapped silver halide photo (with ragged margin edges- see photo) of Hawaii's King Kalakaua's Huli'hee home at Kailua, Kona, on the big island of Hawaii circa 1915+? It has been hand printed in a darkroom for a copy negative on Ilford Pearl semi-matte photographic paper

a single 8x10 inch backing board (not a mat board cutout) and **includes  ragged print edges, margin, and backing board as part of the print as you can see here (see photo)

The original building was made in 1838 for the Governor of the Island of Hawaii, John Adams Kuakini. It has two floors, six rooms, and was built with lava rock, coral mortar, ohia and koa wood. After the governor died it went thru several ownership changes of Hawaiian royalty and was last bought by Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani. It is now a Hawaiiana museum and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage. There is more extensive caption information about the King, and preservation tips included in the label on the back. Even though its from an old photo with some imperfections it is a nice artistic and historic image.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes or may have lived at this area, or historic building location images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.

In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. It is also available in larger sizes, please inquire.

This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a copy negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the ragged edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
