Description

The 2006
MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL
HILO, HAWAI'I
A Poster Sized Print
Designed by Nelson Makua
This poster sized print was created to commemorate the 44st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival.
The completed size measures 12" x 36" with a specific image area of approximately 10" x 31". The layout allows that the title and surrounding boarder may or may not be included in the final framed piece.
Each year the Merrie Monarch Festival, sponsored by the Big Island Visitors Bureau produces a poster of a different design to commemorate that year's festivities. Consistently they sell out before the end of the festival yet no further runs of that poster are printed. The following year a completely new image is produced to honor the next festival. For the first time in Merrie Monarch history however, the same artist has been commissioned to make a complete set of four prints, all of matching size and styling yet each breathtaking in it's own right. This series, begun in the year 2003 festival has as of this 2006 year, been completed.
Designed by Nelson Makua of Na Makua Original Hawaiian Designs, this year's representation of the Hawaiian culture presents the mythical images Hi'iaka and Lohi'au. Completely striking, this rendering has served as a beacon in commemoration of the 2006 Festival, and the individuals; past, present, near and far who recognize the Hula to be so much more than just a dance.
