Description

This is a good quality original (though a little grainy as it was shot on older Ecktachrome 35mm transparency film) photograph custom printed on Epson glossy photographic paper and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing boar
d
**which is included as part of the print that you can see here and not a mat board cutout,  (see photo)
, of a 50 foot+ (old style) close out wave at Waimea Bay December 1969. This season was the largest surf ever recorded on the north shore. No one was out.
If you're familiar with Waimea, you'll notice the 'boil' and realize how big this wave really was, and this was only a smaller one of the biggest sets that day that were consistently closing out across the entire bay! There were many days of surf this in size range over a two month period. If tow in surfing had been used there were ten to fifteen giant spots offshore along the coast from Kaena Point to Sunset Beach that could have been ridden at 60-70+ feet.
It has preservation tips and photography information included in the label on the back
and is initialed (BR '69) and dated on the front lower corner of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes this area or historic ocean images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
This is a quality giclee photo by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus. Waimea Bay is one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only held when the waves are at least 25 feet high. Waimea waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. This is a very popular image at retail locations in Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0". Our original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. We feel we are preserving and promoting the history and culture of Hawaii to Kama'aina, visitors, and other folks at a reasonable price to display or share with others. With proper care it the manufacturer says it should last many years without fading if you carefully follow display instructions included on the label on the back of the print. It is also available in 20x30 inch size unmounted.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen may make the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. The color hues may look slightly different and may have a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. Please be aware of this. **When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a wider margin at the top and bottom of the photo (which you can see if you look at the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot be easily removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. If you want to use a larger frame and can't figure out how to do it with the photo mounted on the backing board, contact us and we can explain how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10 inch frame and displaying the image as is.
